My friend Michelle had spoken to me about real nappies when she had her first girl in shaped nappies. Even though I was not particularly “green” at that time, I did get excited about the design, ease of use and money saving aspect! I had never seen them before, so it was useful to have it explained to me.
When I told my mum that I was going to purchase reusable nappies, she was devastated as she had used terry squares on my sister and rejoiced that by the time she had me, she could use disposables. However I was determined to give it a go and started of with shaped nappies, which friends and family chipped in to set me of on my reusable journey. To contain the smells we get a bucket with a lid and a tote bag for our first trip out with our first daughter, Grace. We soon bought a bidet sprayer that Tim installed on our toilet. This meant we could spray any..."remains", instead of using disposable liners. I soon changed from using cotton wool to cutting up my own squares from an old towel and sheet to wipe her bum. £££’s were saved in our Gracie's first two years of life!
Now Lucy, "Piggy the Second" as we call her (long and loving story behind this name, I assure you!) wears the nappies Gracie poo'd and wee'd in, at no extra cost or loss of quality and absorbency capacity. However I must admit that we have decided to add to our collection of real nappies with All-In-Ones for our wriggly toddler, and some very cute and colourful designs for summer.
